Opeth-vocalist Akerfeldt plans to release singer/songwriter solo album

Date: 15 september 2009

AMSTERDAM - The Swedish metal band Opeth is known for their mix of jazz, blues, progressive rock and very heavy metal. Despite that vocalist/grunter Mikael Akerfeldt is planning to do a singer/songwriter project. Akerfeldt: "My musical view has broadened since I discovered (singer/songwriter) Nick Drake and stuff."

Akerfeldt says that Drake, who died in 1974, was an inspiration to him. "I like the simplicity of it. You really need strong material in order to make it come across with so little. I've already wanted to do this for some time and there are some nice acoustic guitars in my home I want to use more.”

The project will take place aside from Opeth's regular activities. “Even if Opeth wanted to do a singer/songwriter album, I want to do this on my own and I want to record it on my own in my house. I think I can make a good album like that to be honest.”

For now the plans only exist in Akerfeldt's head. There are no songs written or recorded already but he's sure the singer/songwriter solo album wlll see the day of light. "I'm getting ready to write because every time I sit down and play I come up with something that I like."
